Day 3. Our final day while the Hot Rod Power Tour still has four more days to go before they reach the Wisconsin Dells. Here you can find my notes from !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . The day centered around a voyage from Knoxville, TN to Charleston, WV. This was a part of the country that I have never been to and I was excited to see it. It didn't disappoint with lush green hills, deep valleys and the roads that go with that kind of terrain. The roads were really good fun. There were plenty of folks lining the roads looking for the tour to pass as well. Mostly older gents and kids and that is ok. My kids were fascinated to see the coal mines and trains, but they really enjoyed the hard fought game of war in the back seat. For us, the drive was the best part of the day, even the pause at Dairy Cheer for a lunch time Smashburger was a great throwback.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The show at the end of the run in Charleston was what we had become accustomed to. Something between 2000 and 4000 cars depending on who you talked to. The line to get in was huge and they had cars running a number of miles along the waterfront. No exaggeration there. There was a ton of cars, mostly in 4, nose to tail rows on two lanes of closed off streets. It was a nice backdrop, but it meant a good bit of walking after a day in the car. Not too bad overall, except when you realize you are probably 3 miles from the car and the four year old is done walking.
There were more Chevelles, Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs and Challengers than you could shake a stick at. There was also more polish and chrome on display than I've probably ever seen. I came to the realization that the fully done up cars just didn't do much for me. They barely looked real. They hid the fact that they were working machines and that doesn't do it for me. I liked the cars that looked like cars. The once that were cared for, but wore the miles with pride. The cars that tended to catch my eye today were the ones that were a bit out of the ordinary. Enjoy the pics of those below. The one story I did get out of the day was that of the Holden Ute. Turns out there is a guy in Colorado who has made a business of bringing them over. May have to look that one up.
The next two days will see us choosing our own adventures and heading back to Atlanta. The road trip with the family has been fun. I think the kids are the right age for it and everyone has been game for something new. Not a bad way to spend five days.

I wanted to do the long haul, but it wasn't feasible for us. We left after day 2 in Knoxville.

I doubt they'll see if but I asked HR's facebook page if they could search out the owner behind it. As a Miata owner, I'm curious and scared what logic (or lack of) spawned such a thing.

Ah, like the good old days of Jalopnik. Thank you for this.
Stories about cars. *Actual* cars, that possess style and taste and were built by the narrator of the story. Adventures with these cars. No hipster drivel.
I've always wanted to go on this. But my '66 doesn't have a/c and is deafening on the highway.

Did you meet the guy with the Lil Red Express that was wrecked? He wrecked during the tour or something, but wasn't around to ask when I found it. Curious of what happened there. I imagine that will be hard to fix, old dodge trucks are kind of rare, and I am not sure if replacement parts are available for these.
You see the Roadkill Crusher Camaro? I looked for Freiburger, but was nowhere to be found.
And yes, I saw alot of zip ties on this thing.

I was looking for a reason to snark, then I saw the Super Coupe and had big feels about my favorite car that was killed by a random nighttime fire. Now I'm out of smartass and wishing I still had her...

Thanks for all the great write-ups. I can't believe I almost missed day 2! Sounds like a great family trip. I'm sure your kids will have great memories of the time they did the Hot Rod Power Tour in an Evo. How did your kid's pictures of the badges turn out?

Earplugs and suck it the fuck up. Roll down the windows and drive fast enough you forget how hot you are. It is the power tour after all.

Haha I've survived 14 years of it driving that car, so I don't think it'll kill me. But summer daytime is a little rough.
It'll be 107° tomorrow.
The most comfortable solution is the top up for shade, the windows down and the rear glass unzipped. But then it's still really hot air, just moving around now. Like putting a hair dryer in front of your face.

we saw the truck and wondered the same. Kind of looks like he under-steered into something on the twisty bits. It was still driving and I sure hope they can get it fixed. It was the only vehicle we saw with fresh rash.

I noticed a comment you made on your day 2 update, but I didn' t think to comment until now. Going in Charlotte this year was the first of the 4 times I've gone to a stop that I didn't post up and watch the car show roll by. But, back in 2012 when they came through Champaign, IL, I had swapped cars with my dad for a few weeks, so while he was leaving the C6 alone, tucked away in his garage, I was DD'ing his 68 Super Bee. Which I, of course, took to the HRPT stop. In the 30 mile drive from my house to the stop, I jumped on the route that the tour was following, and slid right in with another B-body Mopar, and a mid 60's Chevy II. It was a drizzly day, but everyone in the small towns was out lining the streets, just waiting and watching. They were lining the 2 lane highway, sitting in the backs of trucks and in fold out chairs. It was great.
I did the all Vette cruise at Bloomington Gold the following year, and the same thing - entire towns come outside to see 1000+ cars roll by. And everyone is excited about it.

I think Hot Rods Drag Week is a damn good event. 8-7 second cars pulling trailers with spares driving from strip to strip to compete with no support vehicles allowed. That's some hardcore shit.

Nah, MR-S don't have a b-pillar at all, also there's noticeably more venting in the front of the blue car to provide cooling for an engine located in the front of the car versus an MR layout that would have emphasis for cooling the engine in the rear.

No, it's a Miata for sure, the roofline looks exactly like my '02 and the wheelbase is too short for a B-series. Also, converting a pickup into a functional convertible would be way harder that bondo-ing on a wide body kit.

I work in Charleston and could only see a little bit of the action from my office across the river.
Lots of nice cars running around all weekend. I hope you got a chance to take 60 east up to Hawks nest for some excellent mountain roads.

Actually, what I was trying to say was that the bottom part (I think it's called the chassis) was from a B200, but the rest of the car was a Miata.

I hope you guys had a good time in Charleston! A few of my coworkers walked down to the boulevard during lunch but I was trying to catch up on a project so I was unable to do so. And unfortunately evening plans had me leaving the city right after work. I did get to see several cars leaving down during my commute today, luckily.
